Soil Association

Label designating an ecological cosmetic, allotted by the venerable Soil Association, an English institution founded in 1946 by a group of farmers, scientists and nutritionnists. Soil aims to promote organic farming, and is divided into separate entities: the association in itself, with a nonlucrative scope (any surplus of receipts is used for sensitization and promotion of the bio sector), a consumers' association and an organization of certification.

Soil Association standards for cosmetics adhere to a simple principle: a majority of ingredients issue from organic farming, a minimum of nonbiological raw materials, only authorized if their bio equivalent is not available and on the condition that they are not genetically modified. All the processes of transformation and manufacture must be as ecological as possible.

The text also includes a list of ingredients which are prohibited for ecological reasons or to safeguard human health, among which are the Parabens, Formaldehyde releasers, silicones, PEGs, quarternaries ammoniums, petrochemical derivatives, a few irritating surfactants or nanomaterials
